For our BSA Vacant Lot Green Infrastructure projects, we use a bio-retention soil mix. A bio-retention soil mix is a type of soil designed to allow water to infiltrate and remain on-site, reducing the risk of ponding on-site or runoff off-site. The bio-retention soil is comprised of:

For these sites, 4” of this bio-retention mix is used on top and underneath is 6” of scarified sub-soil, which also acts to encourage more permeability on-site

To date, 85 sites have been part of this program, with more scheduled for the future!

For the Vacant Lot sites, we use a no-mow (or low-mow) mix of grass seed. If you are interested in also using a low-mow grass for your property, try one of the following blends:
